When you find yourself working out from home, you might initially think your choices are limited. Although you’ll probably need to adjust your workout plan and program if you were previously using a gym or other fitness facility, the great news is that you still have plenty of exercise options.

There are so many positive reasons to exercise from home (even if you haven’t been forced to do so!). And we recognise that not everyone has access to a nice big garden or nearby park. Sometimes you might prefer to work out inside anyway, due to the current weather conditions, or for other reasons.

That’s why we want to share some solid ideas for workouts that you can do in a small space in your living room or bedroom. Even if you’re in a small apartment that you share with others, you can still have a great workout.

We also recognise that having a program is one thing. Finding the motivation to get it done, and planning to fit it into your life are other factors. Check out this article about re-finding your motivation, which offers some practical tips to get you started. Our qualified personal trainers are also here to design the best personalised plan and program to meet your unique needs. (Click here to find a personal trainer you can start a conversation with).

Here are our top workout ideas when you’ve got limited space to work with:

Online personal training

We’ve recently launched a brand new personal training service. Instead of physically visiting you in your home, we now also offer virtual personal training via our online personal training sessions. This is one of the most personalised options you could choose if you’re looking for exercises to do in a small space at home. We want you to enjoy your workouts AND stick to them so that you get the incredible results you’re after. Click here to find out more about our tailored online personal training packages.

YouTube workouts

YouTube is a great resource for free (non-personalised!) workouts at home. There are endless options for workouts that require little space. First, you need to decide what type of workout you want to do, and how long you want to work out. This enables you to be very specific with what you’re typing into the search box, which in turn means you’ll be more likely to find what you’re looking for.

For example, if you want to do a HIIT workout, you could type something like “30 minute advanced HIIT workout for home”. Or for a gentler resistance training workout try “beginner’s bodyweight home workout” or “low impact cardio workout at home”. After trying out a few you’ll probably find a channel that you like and which hopefully has a few options for you to alternate between.

Pilates, yoga and stretching are all workouts that require little space. You’ll find endless options for all of these on YouTube and you can also check out these tips to get started with yoga at home.

Use your own personalised workout plan

Perhaps you’re not in a position to launch into our live fitness sessions yet. However, you may want to make sure that whatever workouts you’re doing at home have been designed with your unique medical history, exercise preferences, injury status and lifestyle needs in mind. In that case, our at-home personal trainers can create the best plan and program to meet your needs. We’ll make sure your workout is a good fit for the space you have available and you’ll be able to do in your own time. Get in touch to find out more.

Use a home workout app

Workout apps are another form of technology that can help you carry out a successful home-workout program. There are plenty of options for free apps, or for more features you can usually upgrade to a paid version. Just visit the app store on your phone and have a look around. Like YouTube, be specific with what you’re looking for. Some apps will be geared up specifically for home-based workouts and may have hundreds of workout variations available.

Check out the “quick fit workout app” for short workouts or the “Nike training workout app” for a wide variety of workout options. Both of these are free apps that are available on both android and IOS.

Get fitter with your family

If you’re at home with your family, maybe you can find a way to have fun together and work out at the same time! You might need a little bit more space if you’re not the only one working out and of course, make sure you keep everyone’s safety in mind. A simple idea is to take turns choosing exercises. Kids are likely to love this one and might come up with some pretty creative moves!
